Main responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the Director of Technology to implement and enforce the new technologies through a company. It is important that the CTO of thinking for the future of technology and how it can be incorporated into the direction the company is taking. However, another key task is that the CTO to maintain current information systems technology in a company and make sure you always work as supposed.
Basically this person will work closely with other departments such as marketing and business development to formulate a coherent vision of the new technologies. With a technology planning to be a great responsibility in this role, it is also important for a coach to coordinate new initiatives through studies, assessments and implementation. This applies to all current technologies within a company as well as advances in the future.
When business in current and future development plans of the coach must ensure that all are within the means of the company. The development and control of an annual budget will also be a key requirement.
The analysis capability is critical as the CTO needs to calculate the costs and benefits of investing in new technologies and potentially risky.
The CTO must also be an excellent communicator. Clear communication and people management is critical to the accuracy of their work and the ability to present new implementations of technology to interested parties, for example, is an extremely important responsibility.
Finally an ability to lead and adapt to a fast paced environment is necessary for survival as director of technology and, potentially, a business.
Level of Education required
Education needs a CTO is made up of at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or engineering. Occasionally, specialized training is also a requirement for the role.
Extensive experience is also required (usually ten years), because the skill and knowledge expected of a person in this position is enormous and, preferably, should have been demonstrated and tested in a similar role.
Career Path
The CTO position is a secondary function above and progress beyond it starts to slow. The pay is excellent, but the question remains how to become a director of technology.
Over ten years of technical experience in a related field is usually a prerequisite and climbing the ranks of a company’s information technology or required before considering the path to CTO.
